Ankeny's Tyler Leo runs well with or without the ball. He helped the Hawks race to the CIML Central Conference football title Friday.
Leo ran for touchdowns of 92 and 9 yards and gained 166 yards in No. 6 Ankeny's 42-28 home win over No. 5 Southeast Polk.
His fakes, a key part of Ankeny's tricky offense, helped stun the Rams.
"You get someone coming after you, then they realize you don't have the ball," Leo said. "They get real upset, and you can't help but smile."
Ankeny roared for 564 yards of offense. Alec Lewis rushed for 180 yards and scores of 89 and 39 yards.
Both teams move on to the postseason, which starts Wednesday with substate games.
Ankeny (8-1) overcame a strong Southeast Polk offense, too.
Kody Ingle passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Rams (7-2).
Southeast Polk's Jeff Woody rushed for 267 yards. Ankeny pulled away after leading 21-14 at halftime.
"They had everything going tonight," Ingle said.
Lewis raced 89 yards for a score to tie it at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
Leo followed with a 92-yard run less than 3 minutes later.
Both Lewis and Leo scored on the first play from scrimmage.
Southeast Polk quarterback Ingle ran for a 2-yard touchdown 2 seconds into the second quarter to tie the score 14-14.
Ankeny's Jared Goforth caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Dan Behmer on the next drive.
"We made our big plays," Ankeny coach Jerry Pezzetti said.
Leo, Ross Naylor and Lewis all scored second-half touchdowns.
Ingle passed for two fourth-quarter scores, a 33-yarder to Cody Brady and a 2-yarder to Payton Huinker, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome.
"We know it's going to be nothing but tough, tough teams," Leo said of the postseason.
Pezzetti looked at a 16-team substate bracket after the win. The CIML Central will take at least five teams into the substate round.
"If anybody thinks they'll win just because they have a great record, they're absolutely wrong," Pezzetti said.
Ingle's team is preparing, too. There's a chance for a rematch in the post-season."It's a new season now," Ingle said.
